The Los Angeles Dodgers waved goodbye to shortstop Rafael Furcal, who appeared to be on his way to St. Louis after five-plus seasons in Los Angeles. And Furcal’s sudden departure cast an even larger pall in the clubhouse following their loss to the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Looks like the Ryan Theriot era might be over. I can’t say that bothers me too much.

Between 35,000 and 45,000 years ago, Neanderthals in Europe and Asia were replaced by the first modern humans. Why and how this transition occurred remains somewhat controversial. New research from the journal Science suggests that sheer numbers may have played a large role in modern humans’ eventual takeover; archeological data shows that early populations of modern humans may have outnumbered Neanderthals by more than 9 to 1.

Everywhere but Washington, D.C., that is, where there remains a significantly higher proportion of Neanderthals.

The Chicago White Sox have traded righthander Edwin Jackson and utilityman Mark Teahen to the Toronto Blue Jays for reliever Jason Frasor and pitching prospect Zach Stewart, MLB.com reports.

And Jackson might not get too comfortable in Toronto.

According to Buster Olney of ESPN, the St. Louis Cardinals are close to a deal that will send center fielder Colby Rasmus, and pitchers Brian Tallet, Trevor Miller and P.J. Walters to the Blue Jays in exchange for Jackson, relievers Octavio Dotel and Marc Rzepczynski and outfielder Corey Patterson. Olney adds that Miller is expected to move from Blue Jays to the White Sox.

Right on. I’ve been pretty vocal here about the need to trade Rasmus. The Cardinals unloaded Trever Miller and Bryan Tallet, as well, to get Octavio Dotel and Corey Patterson. This seems like a reasonable trade that should help the Cardinals.

Not even two weeks have passed since Apple issued a security fix for iOS devices and were already being prompted to update our gadgets again. The latest software download, iOS 4.3.5, is a minor update which fixes yet another rather pesky security vulnerability.

Yadier Molina went 3-for-4 with a solo homer and knocked in two runs to help the St. Louis Cardinals take a 10-5 victory over the Houston Astros to open a four-game set.

Colby Rasmus added a two-run homer and drove in three while Nick Punto went 2-for-3 with a triple, an RBI and run scored for the Cardinals, who have won four of five.

It’s good to see some offense from this team.

Colby Rasmus, the Cardinals talented but frustrating center fielder, is slowly but surely playing his way out of the starting lineup. Team GM John Mozeliak has publicly insisted that Rasmus is not available for a trade, but rumors are starting to say otherwise. It might be best for everyone involved if Rasmus left the ‘Lou. Here are the most obvious reasons for a deadline trade.

Rasmus has underperformed, ticked off LaRussa and annoyed his teammates. Those reasons alone should be enough to trade him. Add to that that the Cardinals need pitching for the stretch run, and that they have strength in center in Jon Jay, and you have everything you need to justify the trade.

I hope it happens soon.

Think of some of your most powerful memories, and there’s likely a smell attached: the aroma of suntan lotion at the beach, the sharpness of freshly mown grass, the floral trail of your mother’s perfume. “Scents are very much linked to memory,” says perfumer Christophe Laudamiel. “They are linked to remembering the past but also learning from experiences.”

Off the top of my head … Vicks Vapo-Rub, corndogs, donuts, and grass clippings. Those are some seriously evocative scents for me.
