The rise of smartphones and tablets, led by Apple’s own iPhones and iPads, has done more than just eat into sales of desktops and laptops. It’s made the mouse seem obsolete by allowing us to interact with our devices and data through a touch interface rather than a pointing device. Apple introduced the mouse with the original Mac. Lion largely lays the rodent to rest.

I’ve already noted that, overall, I like the gestures in the Magic Mouse in Lion. I like them enough that I’ve already warned my wife that the next computer device will be the Magic Touchpad. I could easily live without the mouse, and am glad that Apple has expanded the touchability of OSX with Lion.

One of the reasons for Apple’s stunning June-quarter results last week was its surging iPhone sales. Despite not unveiling a new version of the device in June, as it usually does, sales more than doubled from the year-earlier period

iPhone sales continue to rise, despite the near-daily articles about the next “iPhone killer” or the rise of Android. In fact, iPhone sales continue to rise as a market percentage against any other smartphone. It’s had some issues. It’s not necessarily at the cutting edge of the technology any more. But, it’s the most solid smartphone out there and has all the important little details covered. From all indications, iPhone 5 will push it even farther.

Sometimes opportunity knocks softly, and other times it beats the door in.  For internet video-streaming services, the opportunity is sounding loud and clear for a major shakeup of the entire structure.

Xavier Paul was running. No matter what.

The Pittsburgh Pirate reserve watched the ball of the bat of teammate Chase d’Arnaud slice into the outfield with one out in the 10th inning against the St. Louis Cardinals on Sunday and decided he was taking off regardless of where the it landed.

“It was extra inning ballgame,” Paul said. “I felt like it was deep enough. I’m going to make him make a perfect throw to get me out.”

St. Louis centerfielder Colby Rasmus ‘ tracked down the ball but his throw to the plate never had a chance. Paul sprinted home with the winning run in a 4-3 victory as the Pirates avoided a three-game sweep.

Ending a void of White Sox trade scuttlebutt, the Sox are reportedly discussing a deal with the St. Louis Cardinals, according to a story in the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.Looking to bolster their pitching staff, the Cardinals would be willing to part with talented center fielder Colby Rasmus for Edwin Jackson or Matt Thornton, and a prospect, according to the report. There is no indication, but it is presumed that the Cardinals would pick up the remainder of the contract on either Jackson or Thornton.

This can’t be a bad thing.

I’ve never been a big Colby Rasmus fan, and the past few months have proven that his biggest value to the team is the perception that he’s somehow a superstar in the making.

Runkeeper Log

83ºF, 89ºF HI, MHR 175, mHR 76.

Good steady run without a lot of effort, unlike the past few weeks. I didn’t make it to my 24:00 target, but ran better than 21:00. I originally planned to run 18:00, but felt good when I started. I also changed up some of the technology, and am certain the change made a difference in the run.

I installed Lion on Thursday night. While there’s much to like about it, I’ve also come across my first annoyance.

I use a Magic Mouse with my iMac. I like the gestures available for the mouse and am using them extensively. I especially like the additional set of gestures made available for Lion. But the gesture to swipe through browser tab history in Safari is starting to annoy me. When I touch the mouse to click a link, Safari tries to swipe to the previous page in the history. That action invalidates the click on the link. This happens almost every time. So, in practice, I’m clicking twice on every link.

I’m sure there’s a programmatic way to tighten the tolerance for those swipes, requiring a bit more than a touch on the left side of the mouse to activate. I hope we’ll see that in a Lion update.
