Interior of our new baby car… Buying a Mini involves a lengthy process of ‘personalisation’. Almost everything inside can be changed. We added the red trim on the dash and the door handles but shied away from a red steering wheel! Pity there was no red carpet though… We did get the steering wheel with the remote controls and the gearbox paddles. These work very well, and the Aisin ‘box is a little beauty. We also got the Nav-pack, which is a direct transplant of BMW tech, including the ‘mini joystick’, just between the gear lever and the handbrake. Not surprisingly it is the iDrive system incognito; ‘toggle, press and twist’ (and shout! – Good thing we didn’t buy the voice command option). It even draws the transponder map when you reverse, courtesy of BMW graphics.
The new Mini now has the cool start button, but the best ‘button is the ’sport’ button, just in front of the gear lever, together with the ‘DSC off’ (’fun’ on) button. In sport, the EPAS steering becomes super tight, the accelerator reacts to the slightest touch and the gear box runs even tighter. Switch DSC off and you’re laughing… (until you cry!) It’s absolutely amazing how much tech they can stuff into this little car. The headlights come on automatically, the wipers do their own thing, even the rearview mirror dims when some dimwit drives behind you on full beam. The tyres are runflats with a pressure sensor… you almost forget to drive…
