It’s the flippant, disrespectful (using “Bruce,” not “Mr. Sewell,” the “burning a hole in our pockets” line and calling the unfortunate late-20s employee who lost the phone “the kid”) tone that permeates this letter — and, indeed, their handling of the entire ordeal — that irks me. Also, there’s no conceivable way they can claim that they didn’t know it was Apple’s property, “found” or not.

I have to agree with TUAW on this one. I found the tone of the response to be childish, at best. I’d expect a much higher level of professionalism from a group calling themselves professionals.

One thing is going to become clear in the coming years, Braun says: if you want to lose weight, you don’t necessarily have to go for a long run. “Just get rid of your chair.” “…Exercise does have an important role in weight loss. That role, however, is different from what many people expect and probably wish.” And quite nuanced too.

I’ve recently had more of an interest in exercise. I’ve been going to the gym for more than three years, now, but have only gotten serious about it since September. Cardio health is rare and crucial in my family, and I’m not getting any younger.

There is a tech connection to my exercise routine, as you might guess. I’m using the outstanding Runkeeper iPhone app to track my activities. The app is one of my favorites, actually. It takes full advantage of the location services on the phone and updates the Runkeeper site with each activity. Though I’m only using it on the gym for now, it’s still highly motivational to see those activity graphs each month. The plan is to move outside to run starting in late April and Runkeeper will be an invaluable tool for mapping the runs, tracking the activities, and keeping me motivated during each activity with the great blues now on the iPhone.

My own wish list for the iPhone 3.0 announcement today.

  1. Cut and paste: check
  2. Better power management
  3. Background apps: sorta – push notification
  4. Bluetooth stereo: check
  5. App management tools

Not a long list, but one that would seem to be entirely realistic.

Additional good stuff: landscape in all apps, MMS, voice memos, search all Apple apps (including IMAP email searches on the server) in a dedicated screen, media scrobbling, notes sync.

Very nice set of updates. And, I’m glad they’re all within the current hardware set. I’d hate trying to justify a new phone.

Google has added another smart feature to their lineup: tasks. That’s not actually news (it’s been available fir at least a couple of weeks), but I just added a tasks icon to the home screen on the iPhone. It’s now possible to keep my todo list synched with Google from the iPhone. That means Google has covered three of the four necessities with iPhone sync: contacts, calendars and tasks.

That leaves just one piece missing: push GMail. Rumor had it that this will be available soon, via the same ActiveSync tools already in use for contact and calendar sync. Push mail is another piece I’ve missed from the Blackberry. I did set up my GMail account to forward to Yahoo, which does have true push mail. It was tough to keep folders in sync, though, and to remember to change the return address in replies to the GMail account.

So, though I didn’t really realize that I missed it, push mail from Google will be a welcome addition to the iPhone.

I’m really still adjusting to the finger typing of the iPhone. I was a master thumb-typer on the Blackberry, but it’s tough to do on the iPhone.

One app that’s made it a bit easier is TouchType. It allows a user to compose email and Tweets, with spell-check, in a separate window, using the landscape mode keyboard. It works nicely and does make it a bit easier to thumb-type. Even at that, the missing tactile response of the Blackberry buttons is a big minus. I’m adjusting, but it’s the one thing about the Blackberry that I really prefer over the iPhone.

I cleaned up some of the apps on the iPhone this morning – stuff that looked attractive and useful when I downloaded them, but that seldom get used. I’m now down to three screens, all of which contain apps I actually use regularly.

The app I’ve waited for with the most anticipation is the uSirius StarPlayr Sirius XM app. It’s been in Apple’s approval queue for nearly three weeks, now. Hopefully, it’ll be out in the next few days and I can add CNN and MLB Home Plate to my daily listening.

In what could be a significant victory for its online music store, Apple is believed to have landed agreements not only to remove copy protection from the music of all major labels but to also allow direct music downloads to iPhones over cellular networks.

I’ll excuse the one hour of battery life I seem to be able to get out of my iPhone. An arrangement of extra power cords (USB, car, wall) and external batteries gets me through the day. I’ll also excuse the fact that iTunes seems hell bent on not syncing applications from my desktop to my iPhone, and inexplicably removing apps from my phone without any notice. I love that damn phone, and it will take a lot more than lost apps and dropped calls to get it out of my hands.
