My latest book is available for pre-order now from Amazon. It’s very different from the previous two. First, I’m the sole author. Second, where the others were Linux books, this one walks the line between Linux and OS X.

It quickly became apparent that the only thing that was running was Skype, which I had forgotten, running on my laptop under Mandriva Linux. I stopped Skype, and the internet activity stopped immediately. GRRRRRR! What the heck was going on? Skype has said, many times, that a system located behind and NAT router (network address translation) would not be chosen for use as one of their “SuperNodes”, but it certainly appears that this is what had happened.

The really short version for why this is so comes down to Linux clustering enables you to put massive computational firepower into rendering 2D and 3D images. It’s ironic. While getting the most out of NVIDIA and ATI graphic cards on a Linux desktop is still a pain and there’s always some trouble dealing with proprietary video formats on Linux, the top animated and FX-heavy videos usually have their start on Linux systems.

“VMware has been focusing on standardization efforts much more seriously of late. They realize that the actual hypervisor functionality is being quickly commoditized, or near-commoditized, and like every other virtualization vendor, they’re eyeing virtualization management as the source of green-field revenue,” said Michael Coté, an analyst with Redmonk. “IT management is by its nature a heterogenous undertaking, and even for market leaders like VMware, that means promoting standards and openness, at least at the lower levels of the stack.”

That’s what organizers of the CanSecWest security conference hope to discover this week as they give show attendees a shot at hacking into the three laptops they’ve put on display here in Vancouver.

The catch? They have to use a brand-new ‘zero day’ attack that nobody has seen before. The prize? US$20,000, plus you get to keep the laptop.
